Non, je n'ai pas essayé une version plus récente que la 4.1.0 car en téléchargeant les drivers de ATI pour la 4.1.0, je pensais pouvoir faire fonctionner.

oui on m'avait conseillé de passer en sarge, j'aurai effectivement la version 4.3.x de XFree86.
Cependant je vais paraitre lourd, ça signifierait que tout le monde a upgradé sa distrib ?
Voilà, la raison qui m'a poussé à conserver la woody est tout bonnement lié au souhait de monter un server le plus stable possible pour faire du Dev.

tu fais du dev avec une machine équipée d'une 9800pro ???
sinon, la woody est *très* stable, la sarge *bien* stable, la sid est stable (c'est la distrib sur ma machine de dev)

ne crois pas que je vais jouer avec ça.
Ensuite, quand je parle de serveur car je vais installer une base MySql, un serveur d'appli, et un serveur Http. et je vais développer dessus pour avoir un vision des outils sous Linux.

je suis passé à la version Sarge pour avoir le Xfree86 4.3.0 mais le problème reste entier, il doit y avoir des paramètres particuliers à initialiser lors de la compilation du noyau ?! notamment le DRM à désactiver à la compilation, le paramétrage de Xfree86 avec les drivers Radeon ou avec les drivers de fglrx...je reste dans l'interrogation

J'avais exactement la meme config que toi il y a pas longtemps encore et sous Debian Sid, donc y'a pas de raison que ca ne marche pas 
.
Essaye de remplacer PCI:1.0.0 par PCI:1.0.1 dans le fichier XF86Config-4, j'avais ce problème.

Bon j'ai décidé de créer un topic à part pour traiter mon cas particulier. Je précise que je suis newbie dans Linux !!!
Ca fait une semaine que je tourne en rond avec ma debian et mon serveur Xfree86. Mon soucis est de lancer le server X, 2 cas se distingue :
- le server X se lance avec le driver VESA, mais le buro est décalé vers la gauche de mon ecran et la moitié haute du buro s'affiche dans la partie basse de l'ecran, je ne sais pas le centrer
- le server X ne se lance pas du tout avec les drivers ATI (cf. ci-dessous)
je vous décris d'abord mon matos :
Athlon XP 1800+
Elite K7S5AL (chipset SIS735)
Carte noname ATI Radeon 9000 PRO
Carte son Hercules Fortissimo
J'ai compilé mon noyau en 2.6.8.1 avec l'agpgart et le chipset SIS et sans l'option DRM (comme il est indiqué partout)
j'ai le Xfree86 4.1.0, et j'ai téléchargé les bons drivers sur le site ATI et tout compilé comme on l'indique ici mais le serveur x ne se lance toujours pas
