CAUSE
This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
• You install Windows XP SP1, and then use the System Restore feature to restore Windows to a state before the installation of the service pack.  
• You install Windows XP SP1 when Windows XP Home is installed, and then you upgrade to Windows XP Professional.  
The System registry hive is not correctly restored to the Windows registry after you restore Windows.
 
WORKAROUND
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
 
If you cannot reinstall SP1, verify that the Objectname string value is set to LocalSystem in the following registry subkey:  
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan
After you do this, delete the following registry subkeys. These subkeys on a Windows XP-based computer that does not have SP1 installed can cause the symptoms that this article describes:
•HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25  
•HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26  
To delete these keys, follow these steps.
 
Note This procedure includes steps to back up the registry keys before you modify them.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.  
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.  
3. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan  
4. On the File menu, click Export.  
5. In the File Name box, type exported rasman key, and then click Save.  
6. In the RasMan key, locate and then click the ObjectName string value.  
 
If this value is not set to LocalSystem, follow these steps:
a.  On the Edit menu, click Modify.  
b.  In the Value data box, type LocalSystem, and then click OK.  
 
7. Locate and then double-click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25  
8. On the Edit menu, click Delete.  
9. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the selected registry key.  
10. Repeat steps 7 to 9 to delete the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26  
11. Quit registry editor, and then restart your computer.  
 
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Contournement

Si vous ne pouvez pas réinstaller le Service Pack 1, vérifiez que la valeur de chaîne Objectname est réglée sur LocalSystem dans la sous-clé de Registre suivante :  
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan
Après cela, supprimez les sous-clés de Registre suivantes. La présence de ces sous-clés sur un ordinateur Windows XP sur lequel le Service Pack 1 n'est pas installé peut provoquer les problèmes décrits plus haut : • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25  
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26  
Pour supprimer ces clés, procédez comme suit :
 
Remarque Cette procédure contient des étapes décrivant comment sauvegarder les clés de Registre avant de les modifier. 1. Cliquez sur Démarrer, puis sur Exécuter.  
2. Dans la zone Ouvrir, tapez regedit, puis cliquez sur OK.  
3. Recherchez la clé suivante dans le Registre et cliquez dessus :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan  
4. Dans le menu Fichier, cliquez sur Exporter.  
5. Dans la zone Nom de fichier, tapez clé rasman exportée, puis cliquez sur Enregistrer.  
6. Dans la clé,RasMan recherchez et cliquez sur la valeur de chaîne ObjectName.  
 
Si cette valeur n'est pas définie sur LocalSystem, procédez comme suit : a.  Dans le menu Edition, cliquez sur Modifier.  
b.  Dans la zone Données de la valeur, tapez LocalSystem, puis cliquez sur OK.  
 
7. Recherchez la clé suivante dans le Registre et double-cliquez dessus :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25  
8. Dans le menu Edition, cliquez sur Supprimer.  
9. Cliquez sur Oui pour confirmer la suppression de la clé de Registre sélectionnée.  
10. Répétez les étapes 7 à 9 pour supprimer la clé de Registre suivante :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26  
11. Quittez l'Éditeur du Registre et redémarrez votre ordinateur.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, reinstall Windows XP SP1. If the problem is not resolved, make sure the Telephony, Remote Access Connection Manager, and Remote Access Auto Connection Manager services are running.
